The Society of Manufacturing Engineers-UP Diliman Chapter held its 3rd conference on manufacturing and technology entitled, "Ugnayan: Connections in Manufacturing and Technology" this August 19, 2017 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City, Metro Manila.

The event had a total of 393 attendees coming from different universities namely, University of the Philippines Diliman, University of the Philippines Los Banos, University of Santo Tomas, Mapua University, Adamson University, Ateneo de Manila University, Bulacan State University, University of Perpetual Help Delta, De La Salle University, and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

Shortly after the opening ceremonies, the first speaker, Mr. Christian John Emmanuel S. Boydon, started his discussion about manufacturing engineering's impact on the Philippines' industry sector. He talked about the increasing trend of the Philippines' own manufacturing industry, and pointed out the country’s  problem of being dependent on imports and being export-oriented. He ended the talk by encouraging the students to further the reach of the Philippines' manufacturing capabilities.

The second speaker for the event was Mr. John Truman Tan, the CEO of the world's first digital desktop vacuum forming company, Vaquform, Inc. He talked about the several applications of his prized product,  the Vaquform. Being dubbed as the “'Hacking Mass Production”, he aims to distribute portable vacuum forming machines that could create plastic products anytime at anyplace.

The last speaker for the conference was Engr. Almira Ruiz Comuyog, the manager for the Quality Assurance Division of DENSO Philippines Corporation. Her talk, Synergy in Engineering for Automotive Parts Manufacturing, mainly included the designs and applications of DENSO's latest design prospects. She also discussed about several life-saving applications, such as: accident aversion technology, blind spot sensors, windshield path display system, etc.

In between the talks of the speakers, several icebreakers and games were held to hype the audience. The conference ended with a brief synthesis on the three topics, followed by its awarding and  closing ceremonies.

"Ugnayan 2017 is one of the best conference where students can learn about product manufacturing," said Joshua Solomon, a 4th Year participant.

"I learned that everything about manufacturing is connected to our lives and to the whole world so if anyone changes, manufacturing will also change."
