The last day of AUChEEdS 2016, hosted by the Association of Chemical Engineering Students (ACES) of Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) held last September 21 with the participation of different universities— Adamson University (AdU), Batangas State University (BSU), University of San Agustin (USA), University of the Philippines- Diliman (UPD), University of Santo Tomas (UST) and National University of Singapore (NUS)— was concluded with The AmaChEng Race as a culminating activity of the three day summit.
The program started with Engr. Jesuniño Aquino, Program Chair of Chemical Engineering in MCL, giving an opening remarks and talking about what to expect from the day’s event. He assured the participants that the day will be full of fun-filled prepared by ACES s that will truly engage each student present in the event.
The main event was the AmaChEng race. It was inspired from the game “The Amazing Race” in which the fastest team to complete the race, with finished challenges in each stations, will win. 25 teams, with 5 members each, were formed randomly from the students who registered for the game. The race consists of stations with tasks related to Chemical Engineering. The badges, related to Chemical Engineering Processes, were given in each station, signifiying that the team finished the task successfully.
The top 5 teams were chosen but weren’t able to proceed to the final round because of the unpredicted weather condition. Instead, Engr. Aquino declared the first 3 teams to finish as the winners.

Rachelle Tuminez (USA)
Mini games were also prepared for those who were not able to join the AmaChEng race. Twenty five games were prepared, each designed to be played in pairs or in groups. Its goal is for the students to be able to interact with other Chemical Engineering students from other universities. When askes about these games, Roma Ayanah Tigcal of UST stated, “Masaya. Natutunan kong makipaginteract sa mga tao, hindi lang sa mga kabatch ko, kundi pati na rin sa mga ChE students from other schools.”
Before the day ended, Prof. Alberto Laurito praised Gerwin de Borja, ACES President, for his good management and concept for the AmaChEng race. He challenged everyone, especially the UST students, to at least equalize or to surpass what MCL did, expressing his desire for the AmaChEng race to be held yearly to continue what the MCL has started with doing the activity. He also thanked everyone for being participative in the activities that were held for the last three days.
Foreign students who were also participants shared their thoughts before saying goodbye to everyone with Bowen Du of NUS saying, “The day 3 of the event was really exciting. The amazing race was crafted intricately, as seen from the challenge tasks. They were intended to match and illustrate Chemical Engineering concepts like Organic Chemistry, Fluid Mechanics (Non-Newtonian fluids), and Phase separation. The challenges tested the wits, strength and teamwork of the participants. It was an overwhelming success due to the careful and creative planning,” and Jonathan Fheng, also from NUS saying, “The third day was fun, but quite tiring because of hot weather. But the program was very well organized and the karaoke in the bus was entertaining.”
