By Ciara Jane R. Roncales

Recognizing the need for empowering today’s youth into future passionate leaders,  the UST Chemical Engineering Society launched a two-day leadership summit this August 4 to 5 entitled “Press Start: The 15th Chemical Engineering Leaders' Summit” at the Rizal Re-Creation Center in Rizal, Laguna. The summit was spearheaded by its project heads, Jinessa Surot and Niña Ytturalde, with over 70 participants.

Day 1 included a series of group activities and team-building exercises that aimed to test and enhance their teamwork, cooperation and leadership skills. After dinner, the participants engaged in group reflection assemblies about their recent activities to deepen their understanding of effective, meaningful, and inclusive leadership with the help of the facilitators. While the first day was full of rigorous training sessions, Day 2 focused on enhancing social interactions which involved zumba exercises, CLS dance demonstrations and leisure time. Concluding the summit was a photo opportunity with the faculty, followed by the closing remarks. Rev. Joseph “Joe” Mauk was invited as the guest speaker who provided the inspirational talk and entertainment for the participants. He spun different kinds of tops, big and small, colorful and plain, while emphasizing the importance of those tops and relating their qualities to what will be deemed worthy in the eyes of the Lord. He also recalled his fulfilling experience in making and spinning the biggest top in the world for the Guinness World Records. Despite his near-death encounter while spinning the top, he considered himself lucky to be the recipient of God’s miracle while doing what he loves.

The participants commended on how the summit has encouraged them to step out of their comfort zones and get to know each other very well. “Our strengths and weaknesses as a person were showcased, so each and every member of our group helped each other to overcome those weaknesses,” said Jude Michael Bagayao, one of the participants of the summit.  “I want to say kudos to the facilitators and project heads because they never failed to inculcate values in each activity.”

The project heads commented on their CLS experiences as stressful yet rewarding. “I hope that they learn a thing or two from the summit and how teamwork is really essential for any project or task,” said Niña Yturralde.
